Did you know? Moxie ranks among the first mass-produced soft drinks offered to the public in the United States in the late 1800’s. Its creator, Dr. Augustin Thompson, originally created the concoction as a patent medicine called ‘Moxie Nerve Food’. The good doctor claimed that the tonic was highly effective at warding off paralysis, softening of the brain, nervousness and insomnia. Eventually, Dr. Thompson added soda water and changed the name of the product to “Beverage Moxie Nerve Food to move away from the medicine connotation. Moxie’s flavor is unique and has often been described as sweet with a subtle bitter aftertaste. As of 2018, Moxie became a subsidiary of the Coca-Cola company. The commonly used word ‘moxie’ (meaning courage, daring and determination) originated from Dr. Thompson’s bitter, yet sweet, creation. Moxie continues to be regionally popular, even today. FYI: President Calvin Coolidge was a ‘Moxie Man’ and Boston Red Sox superstar Ted Williams widely endorsed the product on both radio and in print. Moxie even marketed a beverage called “Ted’s Root Beer" in the early 1960’s.
