Did you know? South Carolina was the first among the colonies to introduce a significant modification of the paper money system. As a result of an act of Assembly on May 8,1703, South Carolina authorized the issue of six thousand pounds in bills of credit. These notes were issued in denominations ranging from fifty shillings to twenty pounds. They were made receivable for all public dues and a legal tender in all private transactions.
