Did you know? The swordsmith Amakuni, while in service as a weapon designer for the Emperor of Japan, is attributed with being the inventor of the Tachi sword (around 700 AD) which eventually became the Katana better known as the “samurai sword”. Legend has it that Amakuni was distressed at seeing the swords of brave soldiers break down in combat. He discovered that the swords were poorly forged and prone to breaking when hitting against hard objects, like armour. He set out to discover a solution. The result was the forging of the first long, curved, nearly indestructible single edge sword. The forging process of the Katana was a spiritual event. Before beginning to make each sword, the swordsmith would recite a prayer to Buddha. The Katana remains, to this day, a hallowed symbol of Japanese culture.
