Did you know? Our newest subject of interest is actress Marilyn Monroe’s husband. As you may or may not know, there are three distinctly different possibilities. Marilyn was married to her high school sweetheart, James Dougherty, New York Yankees legend Joe DiMaggio and lastly playwright Arthur Miller. She also had connections to John F. Kennedy, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and several others. Possibly we will revisit James and Arthur at a later date but for now the focus will be on “The Yankee Clipper”, the center fielder who dedicated his entire major league baseball career (13 years) to the New York Yankees. Joseph Paul DiMaggio began his career with the Yankees in May of 1936. He won the American League’s most valuable player three times (1939, 1941 and again in 1947). He was also the only player to be chosen for the All-Star team every season that he played. In addition, the Yankees won ten American League Pennants and an astounding nine World Series Championships during Joe’s 13-year stay with them. DiMaggio retired from the Yankees during the 1952 season with a .325 lifetime batting average, 2,214 hits, 361 home runs and 1,537 RBI. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955. And yes, as mentioned before, he was one of Marilyn Monroe’s three husbands. Her favorite, I’m sure!
