Did you know? John Adams Dix was a renowned U.S. army officer and Senator. His political career began with his election to the U.S Senate, serving from 1845-1849. Dix was appointed as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury during the James Buchanan presidency. During the Civil War, he was commissioned a major general by Abraham Lincoln. For three years (1866-1869), Dix served as minister to France. After his return to the United States, at the age of seventy-five, he became the Republican Party’s successful candidate for Governor of New York State, serving from 1873 to 1874. Dix died in New York City on April 21, 1879 at the age of eighty. He was buried with full military honors at the Trinity Church Cemetery.
