Mahatma Gandhi, known throughout India as the "father of the nation," was a powerful voice for peace during a very volatile time in India’s history. ​His famous hunger strikes and message of nonviolence helped to unite the country and ultimately led to India’s independence from the British on August 15, 1947.

Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, is one of only three national holidays in India. His birthday is commemorated with a prayer for peace and with the singing of his favorite song, Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram. Sadly, Gandhi was assassinated in 1948, shortly after independence was achieved and while India was plagued with bloodshed over new boundaries between religious groups.
