Did you know? Entertainment Weekly described the Star Wars franchise character, Princess Leia Organa, as a “diplomat, spy, warrior and undercover agent”. The Huffington Post referred to her as “a smart, feisty, brave diplomat and warrior". In a 1983 Rolling Stone interview Carrie Fisher was quoted as saying, “There are a lot of people who don’t like my character in these movies; they think I’m some kind of space bitch. She has no friends, no family; her planet was blown up in seconds…so all she has is a cause”. Leia has often been referred to as a 1980s icon, a feminist hero and model for other adventure heroines. The role of Princess Leia was conceived and cast by Star Wars creator George Lucas. Fisher won the role at only 19 after an audition ‘tug of war’ with actresses including Jodie Foster, Amy Irving and Cindy Williams. Her spot-on depiction of Leia sealed the character as an icon, celebrated for her feminist power and classic ‘cinnamon bun hairstyle’. Sadly, Fisher died December 27, 2016 after suffering a heart attack at just 60 years old.
