It’s the Mega Superstar of Hot Wheels. Only two prototypes of the die-cast micro-mini vehicle are known to exist. None were ever sold to the public. The 1969 Pink VW Beach Bomb Rear-Loader (based on the Volkswagen Microbus) is the absolute rarest and nearly impossible to procure Hot Wheel in existence! It features surfboards loaded into the back of the vehicle through the rear window. The prototype never saw the light of day after designers ultimately deemed it too narrow, top heavy and unable to fit properly in the Hot Wheels Super Charger. On the redesigned version that the public finally got to see and purchase, the boards slid into a side pod. All problems solved! Mattel began producing the made to scale replicas of cars, trucks, SUV’s and classic cars in 1968. They have been on fire ever since! The estimated value of the VW Beach Bomb has reached figures as high as $150K! FYI: For its 40th Anniversary in 2008, the company celebrated by creating a diamond-studded Hot Wheels cast in white gold with 23 total carats of diamonds and featuring genuine rubies as taillights. Cost $140K!
