Tips and Tricks on Becoming A Collector

  1. Decide on what you would like to collect by discovering what you’re drawn to. Do you already have a passion for a certain genre of collectibles? Do you keep looking at the same type of items when you ‘play’ on eBay? (be honest, we all play on eBay sometimes)
  2. Research! Learn all you possibly can about your chosen area by Googling articles, watching videos, checking out books from the library and (best of all) visiting locations where you can get to know dealers that share a passion for the type of items you are collecting. As Matt Bevin says, “I would encourage you: be informed because knowledge is power.” Become well-educated about whatever you decide to collect.
  3. Collectors of similar items often know each other. Get to know as many people as you can who collect, buy and trade in the items you collect. Visit shows, antique shops, auctions, swap meets and maybe even consider joining a club or association!
  4. Don’t be impulsive or in a hurry when you are looking for items to fatten up your collection. Do your research and find out if the item is truly a good deal or simply over-priced.
  5. Again, when searching for items to expand your collection, don’t always be so quick to buy. Go for quality, not quantity. Small, quality collections will always increase in value and ultimately be more enjoyable than larger collections with lower-grade pieces.
  6. Baby and care for your collection by utilizing sturdy cases, protective sleeves, bubble wrap, hard-shell covers, stackable containers, etc. to protect your investment! Regularly inspect and carefully clean your collection items to keep them in showroom condition. Think about investing in a safe if you believe it is necessary to adequately secure and protect your precious valuables.
  7. If it’s feasible, display a part of you collection in your home. Your house can become a miniature museum and the impetus of many interesting conversations.
  8. Lastly, just have fun! Encountering and befriending like-minded collectors and dealers is a huge part of the enjoyment of being a collector.
